Your Outdated Software Is Bringing Risks To Your Company

“I don’t need this, my software is working just fine” – if you are one of these people saying this, or knows someone that says that, or if you just never thought about updating your software, this blog post is for you.

It might sound dramatic to say your software is at risk, but it truly is. Outdated software doesn’t just expose your business to security vulnerabilities; it can also lead to rising maintenance costs, reduced performance, and compatibility issues that will weigh heavily on your budget in the coming years.

The good news? If your company is still operating with legacy outdated software, there’s still time to act. By modernizing your systems and adopting up-to-date technologies, you can protect your business, boost efficiency, and future-proof your operations.

There are many factors one should take into consideration when thinking about modernizing your software. It is of course a cost factor, but the sooner you do it, the better, and thank us later. Still wondering why? Here are the key reasons why we advise everyone to update their softwares.

1.Security Risks and vulnerability to cyber attacks

With Legacy Softwares and no update to security systems, the software stays more vulnerable to cyber attacks and information leaks. This for hackers is something they constantly target, and sometimes this can result in serious outcomes. So, if you want to avoid being a target of cybercriminals and want to protect your data and other sensitive information, we would strongly suggest you to close the door behind you’ve left open and update your software asap.

2.Increasingly costs for older software language and architecture experts

You have probably designed your old software to meet your businesses processes, but the sad news is, that many outdated systems are not flexible, and cannot easily adapt, and implementing changes is challenging. This means, you need to find people with expertise in old software architectures, and wait longer for any change to be done, due to its inflexibility and difficulty.

Now, we have a huge wave of people going on retirement and some new generation people coming into the market, however these new people are trained with state-of-the-art systems and often lack knowledge on older languages and architectures. This means, you will probably need to find people that still understand these old languages, which makes them experts in the field, and the costs to hire such experts will only increase with time. So, once more, the time to make a change and an investment in your outdated software is now, so that you can save money in the future.

3. Legal Requirements are no longer met

If the last two reasons was still not enough to convince you that you need to update your software, let me introduce you to the third and very important point: Legal requirements. With Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the rise, and data privacy concerns, we have new regulations that are also always shifting and adapting. With older systems, these new regulations are not taking into consideration, so, often they are not met. This can result in some costly problems with the government, or any other institution that controls this sector in your country. Not only this, but also, privacy concerns is something governments are being very meticulous about this. Securing users information and protecting it from the public eyes is not something you should take lightly. In other words, please consider updating your software and comply with newer legal requirements. If you’re not sure about what the regulations are, you can read this other blogposts, which we tried to breakdown and explain the newer regulations for websites and data protection in different locations.

4. Competitive Advantage loss

Let’s paint a clear picture of what it would look like if you for example sells light bulbs, but of course you’re not the only one, but you, in the beginning of the 2000’s developed together with another company a software to keep count of your inventory, orders, delivers, warehouse and incoming orders from light bulbs providers around the globe. This was something that saved you lots of time, as you didn’t have to do that by hand anymore and you had an advantage edge there, and could focus on scaling instead of counting how many light bulbs you have in your warehouse over and over again. It’s now 2025, almost 2026, and you noticed in the last 15 years a significant change in the market, how customers behave and the amount of orders from your B2B clients declined. I’m here to tell you, this should not be a surprise to you. While you were happy with your software, your concurrence saw the opportunity and updated their systems, now they have a better overview of the orders, it is an intra-connected system, where tasks are automated and all employees know, understand and communicate in real-time with each other from different departments and locations, which makes the whole process much smoother. No only that, they have a new website, with new features and new analytics tools, so they know exactly who their clients are and they can target them much better.

Could you paint the picture? Of course, this might be a bit of an extreme case, but you there is so many opportunities with an updated system that is tailor to your needs, and if done it correctly, it can even give you that competitive advantage you need.

5. Costly downtimes

While it’s true that some softwares works fine, and do all of the things you need it to do, it might not help you achieve your ambitious goals. When a software fails, which trust me, it happens, and you loose an hour of work, or you cannot accept orders, because, well, your system is down, this can cost you a ridiculous amount of money. This could have been avoided if you would have just updated your damn system (internal screams). So, if you still don’t believe that software updates are a must, then follow us on LinkedIn, then you’ll understand.
